Heart Tethered by the Tide

Some places don’t let go of you.

Years ago, while standing along a working dock on the northern coast of Ireland, I took a photograph that stayed quietly tucked away in my files — not because it wasn’t beautiful, but because it carried weight. Heavy coils of rope rested against the stone, worn smooth by years of salt, weather, and work. Just beyond them, calm blue water stretched across the bay toward distant land near Tory Island. Boats moved in and out of view, just outside the frame, their presence felt even when unseen.

That image followed me home.

When I finally returned to it in paint, I knew the rope had to be the heart of the composition. It represents more than a working harbor — it speaks to endurance, responsibility, and the unseen labor that keeps coastal life moving. The rope holds tension and stillness at the same time, anchoring the scene while allowing the water and sky room to breathe.

Heart Tethered by the Tide was painted in 2025 using traditional oil techniques built slowly through layers and glazing. I wanted the surface to feel lived-in — textured, softened by light, and quietly reflective. The calm water and distant shoreline offer contrast to the grit of the foreground, creating a balance between effort and rest, movement and pause.

This painting isn’t about boats or destinations. It’s about the pull certain places have on us — how memory, labor, and landscape can tether themselves to the heart long after we’ve left.
