The Alizarin Sky by Steve Ross
Painted in 2019, The Alizarin Sky was one of only six paintings Steve Ross created while preparing for his first comeback class that year. Its warm alizarin-crimson sky, soft atmospheric transitions, and familiar Ross-style landscape give the painting a quiet sense of drama and nostalgia.
What makes this particular work especially meaningful is its place in Steve’s return to teaching. While he revisited this type of glowing sky more than once, this painting comes from a very specific moment in that story.
The painting was purchased directly from Steve Ross and has remained in a private collection since. Its provenance and history are part of what make it such a distinctive piece for collectors of Steve’s work.
Collector’s note: Steve and I have joked about alizarin crimson more than once, and there is a story behind this one. If you become its next owner, I’ll happily let you in on the joke.
