John Wayne – Rooster Cogburn
Original Oil Painting – One of a Kind
This painting was inspired by an upcoming trip to England to paint with the talented artist Marion Dutton. In honor of her, I decided to paint Marion—John Wayne himself, whose birth name was Marion Robert Morrison. It felt like the perfect tribute: two Marions, both icons in their own right.
The reference image was a black-and-white photo, but I brought it to life with color, using inspiration from another John Wayne film to capture the tones and character. The result is a portrait full of grit and warmth—Rooster Cogburn as you’ve never seen him before.
Viewers often comment, “It’s John Wayne!” followed closely by praise for the detail in his weathered skin and deep expression. The wrinkles tell a story all their own.
Painted in oil on hardboard, this piece measures 16x12" and is framed to 17.5x21.5".
Perfect for Father’s Day or any John Wayne collector.
